Fire Captain Candidate

The training program for fire captain candidates lasts 18 months. Candidates are hired as civil servants on a revocable basis. The career training program begins with the basic training course on the first business day in April. Applications are accepted in August for the upcoming training year.

The hiring requirements under the ThürFwLAPO are:

  • must be under 32 years of age as of the date of hire,
  • at least a qualifying secondary school diploma,
  • successful completion of vocational training suitable for firefighting service,
  • personal suitability for appointment as a civil servant on a revocable basis,
  • no health restrictions regarding operational duty with a professional fire department,
  • Possession of a Class B driver’s license (Class C preferred),
  • an enthusiasm for and aptitude in working with technology, as well as
  • reliability, a sense of responsibility, and the ability to work well in a team.

Completion of training as a paramedic or emergency medical technician, as well as experience working with a volunteer fire department, are advantageous but not required.

  • 6-month basic training course and interim exam
  • Training to become a paramedic
  • Obtaining a Class C driver’s license
  • Courses at the Thuringian State Fire and Disaster Management School in Bad Köstritz (TLFKS)
  • Final training course with career qualification exam at the TLFKS

As a general rule, applications can only be considered after a public job posting has been issued. Job postings for “Fire Captain Trainees” are issued on a regular basis from early August through mid-September. You can find the current posting on our job boardduring this period .

Application Materials

Your application materials consist of:

  • Cover letter,
  • a resume in table format,
  • a copy of your high school diploma,
  • a copy of your vocational training certificate (skilled worker or journeyman’s certificate),
  • a copy of your driver’s license,
  • if applicable, copies of professional certification as a paramedic or proof of training as an emergency medical technician, and
  • if applicable, copies of training certificates from the volunteer fire department (promotion certificates are not required).

After the application deadline, the Human Resources Department will send out invitations to the aptitude screening process. Candidates must successfully complete the following modules:

  • Theory test
  • Physical fitness test
  • Practical test
  • Swimming test
  • Personality test
  • Interviews
