Fire Inspector Trainee

Applicants for an apprenticeship as a Senior Fire Inspector Trainee (senior fire service) are trained by the Fire Department as needed. Hiring is on a revocable civil service basis. Career training typically begins with the basic training course on the first business day in April. The call for applications is issued in August for the upcoming training year.

The hiring requirements under the ThürFwLAPO are:

  • candidates must not have reached the age of 35 by the date of hire,
  • at least a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification in a field suitable for the career path,
  • personal suitability for appointment as a civil servant on a revocable basis,
  • no health limitations that would prevent performing operational duties with a professional fire department,
  • possession of a Class B driver’s license (Class C preferred), as well as
  • reliability, a sense of responsibility, and the ability to work well in a team.
  • Basic Training Course
  • Practical vocational training in the fire service with off-site components,
  • B III Course (Group Leader for Professional Fire Departments) and
  • B IV Advanced Course with career examination (Platoon Leader for Professional Fire Departments).

The basic training course is conducted by the Jena Professional Fire Department. The practical training takes place at the Fire Service Department and at other professional fire departments in Germany.

The B III course and all other firefighting technical courses take place at the Thuringian State Fire Service and Disaster Management School in Bad Köstritz (TLFKS). The B IV course is conducted at a professional fire department in Germany, subject to availability of a spot.

As a general rule, applications can only be considered after a public job posting has been issued. Job postings for “Fire Captain Trainees” are published from August through mid-September. You can find the current posting on our job boardduring this period .

Application Materials

Your application materials consist of:

  • cover letter,
  • a resume in table format,
  • a copy of your high school diploma,
  • if applicable, a copy of your vocational training certificate (skilled worker or journeyman’s certificate),
  • a copy of your college degree
  • copy of driver’s license,
  • if applicable, copies of professional certification as a paramedic or proof of training as a paramedic
  • if applicable, copies of training certificates from the volunteer fire department (promotion certificates are not required).

After the application deadline, the Human Resources Department will send out invitations to the aptitude screening process. Candidates must successfully complete the following modules:

  • Theory test
  • Physical fitness test
  • Practical test
  • Swimming test
  • Personality test
  • Interviews
