Emergency paramedic

As an emergency paramedic, you are the professional responder at the scene of an accident. You have to quickly get an overview of the situation, make decisions and carry out medical measures. You also ensure that the vehicles and equipment are ready for use. You will also be responsible for handling emergency calls in the central control center. The three-year training course is based on the Emergency Medical Technician Act.

Training begins on September 1st of each year and lasts three years. It takes place in the dual system.

  • At least a secondary school leaving certificate or successfully completed vocational training of at least two years' duration after leaving secondary school
  • Health suitability for working in the rescue service and in the professional fire brigade
  • Possession of a class B driver's license (must be obtained during training at the latest)
  • Interest in medical issues in emergency medicine as well as enjoyment and skill in dealing with technology
  • A sense of responsibility, empathy, flexibility and the ability to work in a team

The following is an advantage

  • Involvement in a voluntary fire department or other aid organization, such as the German Red Cross, ASB, Malteser Hilfsdienst, DLRG or similar.
  • Internship in the medical or nursing field
  • Class C driving license

The theoretical knowledge is imparted by the DRK-Bildungswerk Thüringen gGmbH in Meiningen

The main training focuses include

  • Recognizing, recording and evaluating emergency and dangerous situations,
  • Selecting, implementing and evaluating rescue service and emergency response measures,
  • Communicating and interacting with people seeking and in need of help,
  • structure processes in the rescue service and
  • Participate in medical diagnostics and therapy.

During your practical training, you will work at the rescue stations in the city of Jena, as well as in the surrounding area and in hospitals.

  • Carry out immediate medical measures at the scene of an accident
  • Assisting emergency doctors
  • Maintaining, equipping and disinfecting vehicles and medical equipment
  • Logging operations and writing reports
  • Processing emergency calls and dispatching rescue resources in the central control centers

Once you have successfully completed your training as an emergency paramedic, if you are suitable for the intermediate fire department career path, you can then train as a fire officer candidate as a civil servant on revocation.
